Nigerians Are Asking For Burna Boy's 'Ye' To Replace The Current National Anthem
The national anthem of a country, like all other national symbols, is meant to reflect the beliefs of a nation and its people. For most nations, especially those that don’t screw over their citizens, the national anthem should, more often than not, stir up feelings of patriotism.
Well, for a lot of Nigerians, that has not been the case for a long time. It’s hard to willfully serve your "fatherland with love and strength and faith" especially when said fatherland is so frustrating. So, it’s not hard to see why Nigerians want it changed to something more appropriate: Burna Boy’s "Ye".
the visceral reaction to
Falz childish Gambino - inspired "This is Nigeria "proved, Nigerians are really frustrated with the current state of things. But unlike that song, which was filled with righteous indignation, "Ye" is a song about wanting to enjoy life despite its harsh realities change
Easily the best track off Burna boys excellent mixtape, Outside.

it's pretty clear why Nigerians have gravitated towards it so much. With lyrics like "Plenty, plenty, plenty suffer wey we face/ Just to make sure money dey" and chants of "I can't come and kill myself", the anthemic song is hella relatable.
So, while the song hasn't even been released as an official single or gotten its own music video yet, that hasn't stopped Nigerians on Twitter from repeatedly requesting that it replaces "Arise, O Compatriots", and in some cases, even declaring that it already has.
Well then, shall we all rise for the new, catchier national anthem..
